Fort Madison, Iowa

Fort Madison’s brick streets and Victorian architecture are the perfect backdrop to take you through time for an exploration of the history of this Great River Road community.  Back when Iowa was just an uncharted territory, Fort Madison was the start of American inroads into the region.

~OLD FORT MADISON~

Summer time reenactments, tours, and demonstrations help immerse you into the story of this period replica.  Rebuilt near the original site on the Mississippi, this Fort once played host to the local Native tribes, acting as a trading post before being engulfed in the War of 1812.  Open seasonally.

~THE RAILROAD~

The longest double-decker swing span bridge in the word was built in 1927 to cross the Mississippi at Fort Madison.  The bridge still opens a few thousand times a year, so there’s a good chance you’ll get to see it letting river traffic through.  Be sure to check out the Santa Fe Depot Museum complex.

~HISTORIC MAIN STREET~

Antiques, local art work, gift and candy shops.  This historic downtown is exactly what you would expect it to be.  The buildings are being preserved for their historic value and the community even has a Tin Ceiling Tour, to view the original tin ceilings in many of the shops.

~EXPLORING FORT MADISON~

When staying in Fort Madison you can choose from the standard hotels and motels you are familiar with, or try a Victorian style inn or bed and breakfast.  With a local brewery, winery, and vineyard, along with plenty of dining choices, a day of exploring history can wind down with an evening of enjoying everything today’s Fort Madison has to offer.
