Best of the River is focused on the best attractions, accommodations, food & drink, and trails & tours along the Great River Road from northern Minnesota down to the Gulf of Mexico.
Best Scenic Overlook
1.Lover’s Leap (Hannibal, MO)
Lover’s Leap is 5 acres of park atop a bluff on the south edge of Hannibal. It offers a panoramic view of the city, the Mississippi River and miles across into Illinois.
2.Pikes Peak State Park (McGregor, IA)
Enjoy some of the finest views in the upper Midwest from the overlooks and trail viewing platforms. Hikers will see sheer walls of Decorah limestone, and fossil remains.
3.Pere Marquette State Park (Grafton, IL)
Pere Marquette State Park is a nature lover’s paradise. Enjoy the spectacular views of the Illinois River and its backwaters from several points atop the bluffs.
4.Buena Vista Park (Alma, WI)
City park with a stunning overlook of the Mississippi River, hiking, picnic area. Largest natural balcony overlooking the Mississippi River.
5.Grandad Bluff (La Crosse, WI)
Grandad Park opened in 1912 and is the largest bluff in the La Crosse area. It is well-known for its scenic overlook of La Crosse and several bluffside hiking trail.
