Best of the River is focused on the best attractions, accommodations, food & drink, and trails & tours along the Great River Road from northern Minnesota down to the Gulf of Mexico.
Best Nature Center
1.Nahant Marsh Education Center (Davenport, IA)
The Nahant Marsh Education Center is located on the Nahant Marsh, a 305-acre preserve part of a 513-acre wetland complex that is bordered by the Mississippi River.
2.National Eagle Center (Wabasha, MN)
An educational interpretive center, home to live bald and golden eagles. “Connecting people to eagles in nature, history and cultures.” Open year round.
3.Nature Institute (Godfrey, IL)
Fostering an awareness and appreciation of the natural world through preservation, restoration, and education. Offers free, public hiking April through November.
4.National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium (Dubuque, IA)
Part aquarium, part museum, part science center, the National Mississippi River Museum & Aquarium inspires by creating experiences where history and rivers come alive!
5.Effigy Mounds National Monument (Harpers Ferry, IA)
The monument’s 14 miles of hiking trails will take you past the ancient mounds, through wooded bluffs and tallgrass prairies to scenic overlooks of the Upper Mississippi.
