Best of the River is focused on the best attractions, accommodations, food & drink, and trails & tours along the Great River Road from northern Minnesota down to the Gulf of Mexico.
Best Park
Pere Marquette State Park (Grafton, IL)
Pere Marquette State Park is a nature lover’s paradise. Enjoy the spectacular views of the Illinois River and its backwaters from several points atop the bluffs.
Riverview Park (Hannibal, MO)
Enjoy 465 acres of natural wooded land offering scenic views of the Mississippi River. This park has shelters, walking trails, biking trails, statues, and a playground.
Pikes Peak State Park (McGregor, IA)
Enjoy some of the finest views in the upper Midwest from the overlooks and trail viewing platforms. Hikers will see sheer walls of Decorah limestone, and fossil remains.
Yellow River State Forest (Harpers Ferry, IA)
The Yellow River’s backpacking trails were featured in an article which appeared in “Outside” magazine entitled “America’s Top 50 Hikes–The Finest in Every State”.
Riverside Park (La Crosse, WI)
Riverside Park is well known for hosting Riverfest, the Rotary lights, and being a docking station for the Mississippi Queen and other big boat paddle wheelers.
