Writer/Rapper Dessa performed and spoke at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse this week for Creative Imperatives Festival. “I love the bluffs, I love pearl street, and we enjoyed our time at the distillery today” she shared with the crowd at Toland Theater during her concert.

For almost 20 years Dessa has earned her reputation as a skilled rapper in the Minneapolis hip hop collective Doomtree, while also releasing solo music and publishing several books. Her latest, “My Own Devices: True stories from the road on Music, Science, and Senseless Love” is exactly what the title suggests: personal stories from on the road, tied in with her outlook on love and science.

The following day in Annett Recital Hall, Dessa spoke about the path that she carved as a woman in the music industry and the obstacles along the way. She was also joined my Monakr’s Matthew Santos for an acoustic performance.

“Creative Imperatives Festival in La Crosse, Wisconsin showcases art that celebrates female-identified artists, challenges patriarchal structures, and/or disrupts gender norms in the arts, humanities, sciences, and social sciences.” – Creative Imperatives Festival
