BEST OF THE RIVER 2019
Best of the River is focused on the best attractions, accommodations, food & drink, and trails & tours along the Great River Road from northern Minnesota down to the Gulf of Mexico.
Best History Trail
1.Great River Road (MN-LA)
The Great River Road’s network of more than 70 museums and historic sites, known as interpretive centers, showcase fascinating stories of the Mississippi River.
2.The Mark Twain Boyhood Home & Museum (Hannibal, MO)
The Museum currently oversees five historic buildings, two museums and three museum shops including Mark Twain’s Boyhood Home, the inspiration for Tom Sawyer.
3.Mississippi Blues Trail (MS)
The Mississippi Blues Trail markers tell stories through words and images of bluesmen and women and how the places where they lived and the times in which they existed.
4Underground Railroad Tour
There are many locations across the country including Dr. Richard Eel’s House in Quincy, IL. The first stop for fugitives coming up from Missouri.
5.Trail of Tears (MO)
Gain a better understanding of one of the saddest chapters in American history at Trail of Tears State Park, where nine of the 13 Cherokee Indian groups crossed the Mississippi.
